Organization Description:

Name of Nonprofit:
Healing4Heroes
Mission:
Healing4Heroes is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to assisting our military service members and veterans lead healthy, productive lives. Our objective is to connect wounded service members, as well as those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury, with A.D.A. compliant service dogs.
Healing4Heroes has dual purposes in that it serves the community by helping military personnel and veterans as well as local animal shelters by rescuing suitable dogs.

Problem Overview:

The nonprofit aims to provide service dogs to veterans at no cost by offering a trainer program so that local rescues can become ADA compliant service dogs under the care of veterans needing assistance.
The NP has difficulty getting information from the veterans in their service dog training program. For example, the NP needs to know their class (i.e. private, general, etc.) in order to speak with them correctly so they are given the treatment they expect and deserve. The NP also has problems with veterans not revealing their full health information or providing their DD214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty), which is necessary when trying to understand how a service dog can best aid an individual.
Furthermore, a veteran’s health information can change after the start of the program. For example, the NP has found that many veterans come off of pain medications after a year of having a service dog. Without current information, the NP is not able to cater to the veterans in the most effective way. This is especially frustrating because veteran health information can be pulled digitally.

Current Process:

The NP currently asks veterans to provide their own health information either by paper or by word of mouth. Unfortunately, this information may not always be accurate because the veteran may not provide some health info or the information may be outdated. All of this information is either kept on paper or filed in folders on a drive, which makes it difficult to access when needed.

Vision/Goal:

The NP would like to work with BoG to develop a web application that is able to pull veteran information using the Lighthouse API (https://www.oit.va.gov/tech-incubator/lighthouse). The API provides organizations with access to veteran status, health, and other forms of relevant information that would allow the NP to understand the full scope of their clients’ needs. The front-end of the web app should allow the NP to access the data in an organized way with search functionality and sorting features.
The quantitative results the NP would like to see is an increase in access to accurate client health data by 60%.

Project Overview:

By developing a web application for Healing4Heroes to access accurate and current data on the veterans in their program, we can aid the NP in reaching their goal of accessing accurate client data.

Proposal:

Lighthouse APIs to implement:
Veteran Confirmation API – Is a person a Veteran? Name, DOB, and SSN are cross-referenced against the Master Veteran Index and return a “Confirmed” or “Not Confirmed” response. https://developer.va.gov/explore/verification/docs/veteran_confirmation?version=current
Veteran Verification API – A truncated digital DD214. Requires OAuth verification (ID.me, DS Logon, or MyHealtheVet) https://developer.va.gov/explore/verification/docs/veteran_verification?version=current
Health API – Allows a Veteran to share all medical records with a third party. Also streamlining a third parties process with accessing a Veterans medical records. https://developer.va.gov/explore/health/docs/fhir?version=current
Primary task is to connect front-end web application to API middleware.
Implement a sort and search feature
Process
Apply for an API Key www.developer.va.gov/apply
Develop application in a sandbox
Developers are available if there are issues with development - contact API@va.gov
Demo the application with the VA to review code, security, etc.
